Do you ever feel like reading more?

Do you think that reading could help you to improve your thinking or your life?

Often I hear people that they would like to read more but they say something like this:

‘’ I don’t have enough time’’

'' I'm not good at reading''

‘’ I will start reading when I have more time’’

‘’ I am waiting for my holidays etc."

These days we are busier than ever. So, it takes a lot of discipline to manage our time and for a lot of us there is not much spare time left, this is what we think. But let’s see what the statistics and numbers are showing when it comes to time.

In 2016 MediaKix did research on how much time people spend on social media, and just on Facebook the average amount spent was 50 minutes per day. The pie chart below shows how much time, on average, people are spending on other social media platforms:

The average time spent on Social Media in 65 years on YouTube, Facebook, SnapChat and Instagram all together is 5.73 years.

WOW! What would you do with 5.73 years? That's 50,194 hours that you could add to your family, productivity, business, time in nature, holidays? Many times, social media is known as the enemy of productivity (for some businesses it is a golden goose).

I see that many people want to read more books, but they end up spending their time on social media. It's easy to look back in a year or 5 years and feel regret, because instead of doing something useful or something that we want to do, we can waste that time on social media platforms.

In 65 years, people might spend on social media platforms around 50,194 hours ÷ 23,740 days = 2.11 hours/day. So the average time is 2,11 hours a day, and Voila! This is the time for reading! Obviously, it is a matter of priorities, people will always put the most important things for them in first place. If reading is important for them, it will be a priority, if not then it will be forgotten.

TIP- READ SMARTER. Use your finger or a pen when you’re reading, it helps to focus better. Move your finger or the pen under the line you’re reading. It will help you to stay on the line easier. Remember how many times you read a book and something distracted you or your mind started wandering around and you wanted to continue reading and you don’t know where you were. So, having a pen or a pencil you can see where you are and save time. Also, you can move it a bit faster on the paper and the eyes will follow they won’t wander too much on the page, so you will be speed reading, but don’t do it too fast.

I’ve read and listened to over 350 books in less than 2 years and I will share with you the lessons that I’ve learned, so you can apply them, and the books I’ve read, so you can find more details.

The following is divided into 3 sections:

1. How I got into reading

2. How reading helped me in life

3. The list of 450+ books I’ve read

Reading consistently about things that I am interested is one of the best things that has happened in my life. After I got into reading I took a speed-reading course and I also listen to audio-books on a higher speed, generally on 1.55-1.75, it depends on the narration speed. There are some books that I’ve read multiple times, like Think and Grow Rich-Napoleon Hill, Tao Te Ching-Lao Tzu, The Man who loved the seagulls-Osho, Jim Rohn’s audiobooks etc. Some days I’ve read up to 10 hours, but generally, I read for 1-3 hours a day.

Research shows that reading increases intelligence, improves your imagination (a clearer vision), can boost your brain power, help you to relax, increase your vocabulary, get new ideas, motivate, inspire to create among many other benefits.

1. How I got into reading

It all started In 2014 when I read my first book in English, purely out of curiousity, boredom and the hope that it would help me to learn English. It was a very small book and it took me about one month to read it, I used a dictionary to translate words. Almost every day I spent 1-2 hours reading, though there was more time spent on translating than reading. After reading that first book I became more confident in my ability to read in English, which is not my native language.

After that book, I became interested in reading more books and one day I discovered the book, Think and Grow Rich. Reading that book turned my life around, it opened my mind, about what is possible in life. At the same time, I felt some rage, I was 26 years old and no one told me about this book! I learned more from this book in a month than I learned in 12 years of going to school. I discovered this passion for reading and learning and I became deeply interested in personal development, psychology and philosophy. There was another reality, new truths and beauty.

2. How reading helped me

It didn’t take long until I saw the benefits of reading. The things that I’ve acquired through reading are:

  • Having more and better ideas

  • Feeling more inspired and more motivated

  • My mind became clearer

  • I started to have a clearer vision of my future

  • Better focus & concentration

  • Improved imagination

  • Thinking more positively

  • Improved communication and leadership skills

  • Learned more about myself

Seeing how my imagination was improving was big. When I read I noticed that I was really travelling, and experiencing with the author. Reading can be a great experience, sometimes it is travelling with the mind, travelling into the past, into the future, into someone else's world. The amazing thing is that we can experience different things in a short time, whilst not moving the body. Books are like living beings, the ideas, images and places are alive once we reach them with our imagination.

There are so many ideas in books and when I come across a valuable idea, I try to apply that in my life. Reading books like autobiographies or on business or self-help, it’s easy to find an idea to apply. Just think about this, if you apply only one good thing for 365 days, how could your life change for the better? Things that worked for others can work for you!

Jim Rohn said: Success is not more than a few disciplines, practiced every day.

The more you read, the better, only make sure that you read the right books.
